AI for Job Descriptions — Write Inclusive Postings Fast
A job description is your first impression on every candidate. AI helps you write them faster and more inclusively — if you prompt it correctly.
The Complete Job Description Prompt
Prompt:
Write a job description for a [title] at a [company size/type] company in [industry]. Include:
- A 2-3 sentence role summary that sells the opportunity
- 6-8 key responsibilities (start each with an action verb)
- Required qualifications (keep to true requirements only)
- Preferred qualifications (nice-to-haves)
- What we offer (benefits, culture, growth)
Requirements: Use gender-neutral language. Avoid unnecessary jargon. Don’t require a degree unless legally necessary for the role. Keep the total posting under 500 words. Tone: professional, welcoming, human.
Why “keep to true requirements only” matters: Inflated requirements discourage qualified candidates — especially women and underrepresented groups who are less likely to apply unless they meet 100% of listed qualifications.
Checking for Bias
After generating, run a bias check:
Prompt:
Review this job description for biased or exclusionary language. Check for: gendered terms (rockstar, ninja, aggressive), unnecessary requirements that could exclude qualified candidates, age-coded language (digital native, energetic), ability-coded language (must be able to stand), and cultural assumptions. Suggest replacements for any issues found.
Common swaps:
- “Rockstar developer” → “Skilled developer”
- “Young, energetic team” → “Collaborative, motivated team”
- “Must have 10+ years experience” → (ask: is this actually required, or would 5 years with the right skills work?)
- “Native English speaker” → “Strong English communication skills”
- “Culture fit” → “Culture add”
Role-Specific Templates
Technical Roles
Add to prompt: “Separate ‘must-have’ technical skills from ‘nice-to-have.’ List specific technologies but note that equivalent experience is acceptable. Include a note that we value learning ability over checking every box.”
Leadership Roles
Add to prompt: “Emphasize outcomes over activities. Focus on what this person will achieve in the first year, not just what they’ll do daily. Include leadership philosophy expectations.”
Entry-Level Roles
Add to prompt: “Don’t require experience for an entry-level role. Focus on skills, aptitude, and potential. Mention training and mentorship opportunities. Keep qualifications minimal.”
Salary Transparency
More jurisdictions now require salary ranges in job postings. AI can help frame this:
Prompt:
Write a compensation section for a job posting. Range: $[X]-$[Y]. Include: a note that placement within the range depends on experience, mention of benefits (health, retirement, PTO), and any other perks. Tone: transparent, straightforward.
The Posting Workflow
- Draft with AI using the complete prompt (2 minutes)
- Bias check with the review prompt (1 minute)
- Customize with role-specific details only you know (3 minutes)
- Review with hiring manager for accuracy (5 minutes)
- Post across your channels
Total: ~10 minutes vs 30-45 minutes writing from scratch.
Beyond the Job Description
Use the same AI session to generate:
- Interview questions aligned to the job requirements
- Screening criteria for resume review
- Rejection email templates that are respectful and specific
- Offer letter language for the role
One prompt session can produce your entire hiring toolkit for a role.
The goal isn’t just faster job descriptions. It’s better ones — postings that attract the right candidates and don’t accidentally exclude the people you want to hire.
