Canva AI vs Adobe Express for Marketing

I used Canva for two years before trying Adobe Express. Then I used Adobe Express for a month before going back to Canva. Then Adobe released a major update and I switched again. Iโ€™ve gone back and forth enough times to have a strong opinion on this.

Both Canva and Adobe Express now have AI built in. For marketers who need to create social posts, ads, and presentations without a designer, which one is actually better? The answer depends on what youโ€™re making โ€” and Iโ€™ll be specific.

I tested both on real marketing tasks.

AI Design Generation

Canva โ€” Magic Design: Upload an image or describe what you want, and Canva generates multiple design options using your brand colors and fonts.

Adobe Express โ€” Generate: Similar concept. Describe your design and it creates options. Also integrates Adobe Firefly for AI image generation.

Winner: Canva. Magic Design produces more polished, ready-to-use results. Adobeโ€™s generation is improving but the outputs need more manual tweaking.

AI Image Generation

Canva: Magic Media generates images from text prompts. Quality is decent for social media but not photorealistic.

Adobe Express: Uses Adobe Firefly, which produces noticeably better images. More photorealistic, better at understanding complex prompts, and commercially safe (trained on licensed content).

Winner: Adobe Express. Firefly is genuinely better for image generation, and the commercial licensing is a real advantage for marketing use.

Background Removal

Canva: One-click background removal. Works well on most images. Available on Pro plan.

Adobe Express: Also one-click. Slightly more accurate on complex edges (hair, transparent objects).

Winner: Tie. Both work well for marketing assets. Adobe has a slight edge on difficult images.

Text Generation

Canva: Magic Write generates copy for social posts, headlines, and descriptions directly in your design.

Adobe Express: Has text generation but itโ€™s less integrated into the design workflow. Feels more like an add-on.

Winner: Canva. Writing copy inside the design tool without switching tabs is a real time-saver.

Brand Kit Management

Canva: Brand Kit stores your colors, fonts, logos, and templates. Magic Design uses these automatically. Available on Pro and Teams plans.

Adobe Express: Brand section stores the same elements. Integrates with Creative Cloud libraries if your team uses Photoshop/Illustrator.

Winner: Depends. Canva if youโ€™re self-contained. Adobe if your team already uses Creative Cloud.

Templates

Canva: Massive template library. Thousands of options for every social platform, ad format, and presentation type. Quality is consistently high.

Adobe Express: Smaller library but growing. Templates are well-designed. Fewer niche options (specific industries, holidays, etc.).

Winner: Canva. The template library is significantly larger and more diverse.

Social Media Scheduling

Canva: Built-in content planner. Design and schedule posts to multiple platforms without leaving Canva.

Adobe Express: Has a content scheduler too, but itโ€™s newer and less polished.

Winner: Canva. The scheduling integration is more mature.

Adobe is cheaper on paper, but Canvaโ€™s free tier is more generous with templates and basic features.

The Verdict

Choose Canva if:

  • Youโ€™re a solo marketer or small team
  • You need the biggest template library
  • You want design + copy + scheduling in one tool
  • You donโ€™t use other Adobe products

Choose Adobe Express if:

  • Your team already uses Creative Cloud
  • AI image generation quality matters most
  • You need commercially licensed AI images
  • Budget is tight ($10 vs $13/month)

For most marketers: Canva Pro is the better all-in-one solution. The template library, Magic Design, and built-in scheduling make it the more complete marketing tool. Adobe Express is catching up, but Canvaโ€™s head start in the non-designer market is significant.

If AI image generation is your primary need, Adobe Express with Firefly is worth the look. For everything else, Canva wins.
