5 AI Tools That Replace 5 Paid Subscriptions
I did an audit of my software subscriptions last month. The total: $347/month. After replacing five of them with AI alternatives, I’m down to $198/month. That’s $1,788 saved per year — and honestly, the AI alternatives work just as well for my needs.
Here are the five swaps.
1. Grammarly Premium → ChatGPT/Claude ($12/mo saved)
Grammarly Premium costs $12/month for grammar checking, tone detection, and sentence rewrites. But if you’re already paying for ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro ($20/month), you have a better writing assistant built in.
Paste your text and ask: “Proofread this for grammar, spelling, and clarity. Suggest improvements but keep my voice.” You get everything Grammarly offers plus the ability to rewrite entire paragraphs, adjust tone, and restructure arguments.
Keep Grammarly if: you need real-time browser integration (checking emails as you type). Cancel if: you’re fine with copy-paste editing.
2. Canva Pro → Canva Free + AI ($13/mo saved)
Canva Pro’s main advantages over free: background removal, Brand Kit, and premium templates. But background removal is now free at remove.bg, and ChatGPT can generate design briefs that make Canva’s free templates work harder.
“Create a design brief for a LinkedIn post graphic about [topic]. Include: layout suggestion, color palette (hex codes), font pairing, and text placement. I’ll build it in Canva free.”
Keep Canva Pro if: you create 10+ designs per week and need Brand Kit consistency. Cancel if: you create a few designs per month.
3. Otter.ai Pro → Free Tier + AI Summary ($17/mo saved)
Otter.ai Pro gives you 1,200 minutes of transcription and advanced features. But the free tier gives you 300 minutes — enough for most people. For the meetings that matter most, record them and use ChatGPT to summarize:
“Summarize this meeting transcript. Include: key decisions made, action items with owners, open questions, and next steps. Format as bullet points.”
Keep Otter Pro if: you have 10+ meetings per week. Cancel if: you have fewer than 5 important meetings per week.
4. Jasper/Copy.ai Pro → ChatGPT Plus ($29-49/mo saved)
This is the biggest savings. Jasper ($49/month) and Copy.ai Pro ($49/month) are AI writing tools built on the same models as ChatGPT. You’re paying a premium for templates and a different interface.
ChatGPT Plus at $20/month does everything these tools do — and more. Save your best prompts in a document and you’ve built your own template library for free.
Keep Jasper if: you need brand voice consistency across a large team. Cancel if: you’re a solo marketer or small team.
5. Stock Photo Subscription → AI Image Generation ($29/mo saved)
Shutterstock, Adobe Stock, and Getty charge $29-49/month for stock photo access. For blog headers, social media graphics, and presentation images, AI image generators (Midjourney, DALL-E, Adobe Firefly) produce custom images that are more unique than stock photos.
Even without a paid AI image tool, Canva’s free AI image generator and Unsplash (free stock photos) cover most needs.
Keep stock photos if: you need photos of real people, specific locations, or product photography. Cancel if: you mostly need illustrations, abstract backgrounds, and conceptual images.
The Math
| Subscription | Monthly Cost | AI Alternative | New Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grammarly Premium | $12 | ChatGPT (already paying) | $0 |
| Canva Pro | $13 | Canva Free + AI briefs | $0 |
| Otter.ai Pro | $17 | Free tier + AI summaries | $0 |
| Jasper | $49 | ChatGPT Plus | $0 (already paying) |
| Stock photos | $29 | AI generation + Unsplash | $0 |
| Total saved | $120/month ($1,440/year) |
This assumes you’re already paying for ChatGPT Plus ($20/month). If you’re not, add that cost — you’re still saving $100/month net.
The Caveat
These swaps work for solo professionals and small teams. Enterprise teams with 50 people need Grammarly Business, Canva for Teams, and dedicated tools with admin controls. The AI replacement strategy scales down, not up.
Also: don’t cancel everything at once. Try one swap per month, make sure it works for your workflow, then move to the next. Some of these might not work for you — and that’s fine. Even replacing two subscriptions saves $500+ per year.
