The Real Cost: A Worked Example
Let’s say you have a 10-person law firm on the Standard plan.
Standard plan cost:
- 10 users x $25/month = $250/month
- Annual: $3,000
- Envelope allowance: 1,000 per year (100 per user)
Same firm on the Business Pro plan:
Business Pro plan cost:
- 10 users x $40/month = $400/month
- Annual: $4,800
- Envelope allowance: 1,000 per year (100 per user)
The Business Pro plan costs $1,800 more per year. You get web forms, bulk sending, payment collection, and advanced form fields. If you need any of those features, the upgrade is worth it.
Hidden Costs to Watch
Envelope limits add up. 100 envelopes per user per year sounds like a lot, but if you’re sending 10+ documents per week, you’ll hit the limit. Additional envelopes cost extra.
SMS notifications are a paid add-on. The 5 SMS notifications in Standard are a one-time bonus. After that, you pay per SMS.
Identity verification is limited. Standard and Business Pro include 5 identity verification attempts as a one-time bonus. After that, it’s a paid add-on at $2.35 per attempt.
QES (Qualified Electronic Signature) is extra. If you need eIDAS compliance with QES, it costs €10 per recipient on top of your plan.
Monthly vs annual pricing. Monthly plans have the same per-month cost as annual plans, but you lose the flexibility to cancel anytime. Annual plans require a full-year commitment.
How DocuSign Compares
If you’re comparing eSignature tools, we have detailed breakdowns for legal technology tools and contract management. DocuSign is the market leader, but alternatives like PandaDoc and Adobe Sign offer competitive pricing.
For law firms specifically, Clio includes basic eSignature functionality. If you only need a few signatures per month, Clio’s built-in feature may be enough without a separate DocuSign subscription.
For real estate agents, Dotloop and SkySlope offer real estate-specific transaction management with built-in eSignatures. These may be more cost-effective than DocuSign if real estate is your primary use case.
